Free Home Inventory App from the Insurance Information Institute

January 25, 2012

The Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I)—the leading provider of insurance information for consumers—has just released a new app that could make creating a home inventory for your Cincinnati home easier than ever before. And it’s free!

The Web-based software, called Know Your Stuff®- Home Inventory, can be found at KnowYourStuff.org. If you have an iPhone, you can download the app in the iTunes App Store and it will automatically sync with your Web-based account. Just search for “iii inventory” to find it.

How do I setup the home inventory app?

Setting up your free account is easy. You will be guided through the entire process with the account creation wizard. Here are the basics of what you’ll have to do—

First, you’ll be asked to setup an account with information about yourself, your location, and your Cincinnati home insurance policy. The information you provide will be stored on a secure server so you’ll be able to access it from any computer. That way, if your home is destroyed in a fire, you’ll still have access to your home inventory for the claims process.

Next, you’ll begin the task of adding rooms and items to your inventory. You’ll have to add at least one room before you can start adding items to your inventory, and you will be able to assign categories to your items, making it easier to search for and keep track of items.

Once you have your account setup and your inventory created, you’ll have multiple options for viewing reports online or off-line on Excel.

Why do I need a home inventory?

By keeping and maintaining an accurate inventory of everything you own, you’ll have a record of your personal possessions to show your insurance company if disaster strikes.

Plus, a home inventory can help you determine whether or not you have purchased enough Cincinnati home insurance to cover all your belongings.

A home inventory is a valuable asset for any homeowner. No matter what, make sure you keep some kind of record of your personal possessions in a safe place. You’ll be glad you took the time.
