Safe Boating Checklist for Ohio Boaters

June 20, 2014

Life preserver for safe boatingDays spent out on the lake create memories for a lifetime. Make sure those memories are of good times by staying safe.

Just like driving a car, or operating any motor vehicle for that matter, safety should be at the forefront of your mind. Every responsible boat operator should be prepared to deal with dangerous situations before they happen.

Here’s a simple safety checklist to follow when you’re getting ready for a day out on the water:

  • Conduct a thorough pre-launch inspection
    • Make sure the craft has the proper and updated registration
    • Check all safety equipment like flares, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc.
    • Inspect all fuel and fluid levels
  • Make sure there are enough lifejackets for all passengers
    • Include different kinds of floatation devices for both adults and children
    • Ohio law requires the use of lifejackets in the following situations:
      • When riding in a personal watercraft
      • When waterskiing or being towed
      • For any passenger under the age of 10 for all boats under 18 feet in length
  • Avoid alcohol use
    • Operators of the vessel should NEVER be under the influence
    • Passengers can be at risk of falling overboard and should be responsible
  • Use discretion with weather
    • Before embarking, check local weather and water conditions
    • Pay special attention to:
      • Small craft advisories
      • Gale warnings
      • Special Marine warnings
  • Be prepared for the unexpected
    • No matter how mindful you may be of boating, the unforeseeable must be taken into account
      • Have the proper insurance for operational and natural occurrences
      • Have a wireless radio and ensure all cellular devices are properly charged

Remember B.O.A.T: “Be Observant, Always Thinking.”

Don’t take your safety for granted. Always be prepared and aware so you’re ready if a problem does occur.
