Spring Cleaning and Homeowners Insurance

March 18, 2013

Spring is almost here, which means it’s time to wake your home up from its winter hibernation and participate in the time-honored ritual of Spring Cleaning.

While many of us dread this tedious chore, spring cleaning actually presents us with an excellent opportunity to make sure our homes are safe and our homeowners insurance policies are up-to-date.

Here are a few ways spring cleaning can benefit your homeowners insurance policy:

  • You can update your home inventory list as you clean. A lot of us accumulate new electronics, clothes, and jewelry over the winter (thank you, holiday season). The detail-oriented task of cleaning gives you an excellent opportunity to make sure you’re home inventory list is accurate.
  • You can minimize your home’s risk of fire. Clutter tends to amass during the winter, which can be hazardous if exposed to high heat. Use this time to make sure materials are away from heater vents, electric lights, and outlets. Also, check all your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors!
  • You can spot potential maintenance issues. When you’re cleaning, you’ll probably be spending time in places that usually go unseen for most the year like under sinks, behind toilets, and in dark corners of the basement. This is the perfect time to make a list of any potential maintenance issues that should be inspected and possibly fixed before they become big problems.

This spring, kill two birds with one stone (figuratively speaking, of course). Get your spring cleaning done and make sure your home is safe and properly insured.
